Anonymity ≠ Freedom

Anonymity ≠ Freedom

The voice that speaks
that speaks no lie
speaks only one way
and speaks to die.

The voice that speaks
that speaks no lie
speaks so to obey
not what others say.

The voice that speaks
that speaks no lie
speaks out its Name
not Anonymously.

The voice that speaks
that speaks no lie
speaks soft and dimpled
because Truth is simple.

Reply to the great "FUCK" !!

Our Art is an expression and an extension of ourselves. I live this, hence my choice in this approach with the free speech board. The difference between my opinion and yours of this matter is that I was investing my time in placing a wonderful curiosity towards Rebel Arts...You on the other hand wasted your time battling with a fellow member only to achieve hostility and further perpetuation of this "ignorance" you so dimly referred to. Far too often our Artistic extension can be misinterpreted. The fact that "Fuck" became the theme of the board shows me just how blindly these folks read my expression. Did I...Gain attention? No press is bad press.

Remember our mission statement:

"To bring motion and momentum to the student/human voice through the vehicle of the arts."

How I attain this motion and momentum should be least of your concern so long as I am successful in the cause...I believe I was. What I did was align and prep my canvass with beauty and hate and sweet caramel.

I find a Stronger rope to Hang On

Rebels,

With the great company of my friend and fellow Rebel Artist Rachael, I made my way out to the Windham Arts Collaborative Ctr. in Willimantic this Fri. eveningto enjoy a great poetry performance put on by the "Young Poets" of Windham HighSchool. Led by a truly inspirational teacher, Lynn Frazier, these talented and motivated Windham high school students absolutely inspired me. Not only arethey remarkable writers and performers, but they possess a passion for growingand learning in this world that I will use to get out of bed in the morning...

You see...woe is fucking me but most days I dont get out of bed. I don't go outside much. I have no faith in current humanity.I was given a gift by these young adults this eve. Truly amazing!

They unite like we all should. They stand together as artists and celebrate like we all should. When Eddy and I first came up with this notion of the Rebel Arts Union, part of what we considered is our dissapointment with the perpetuation of the stigma that is the lonely, depressed, fucking cracked and torn artist who lives and dies alone.

You see where Im going with this...I want you all to just do three things as Rebl Artists:

1. Admit out loud to a crowd that "I AM AN ARTIST!"

2. Truly unite with this fucking beautiful organization of Rebel Artists.

3. Produce your most inward and challenging works of art for this group willsupport you and help you get to where you need to be.

Hey guys...Fuck the heat Im getting lately for this crew! I will go down if it helps oneof you to feel even the slightest bit of support and success.

I love you guys,

-T.J. Brady

Moving On

Frankly, I found it very amusing, a lot to do over nothing. I took it all down tonight. The board was full. There was no room to add anything. We start anew Monday. Hopefully the next message will do more than just rile people up, hopefully the next message will make people pause and think . . . and the whole thing might perhaps be a bit more on the artistic side.

Until then . . . here's an article about somebody we ought to know about (yes, I think we are getting way off direction . . . we are here to express ourselves through art, not be the social justice nazis of the free speech board).

Dance, art and spoken word combine in a multicultural tribute

By Al Rudis, Staff Writer

The implements around Jennifer Tehani Sarreal represent the multiplicity of world dances she performs. (Photo courtesy of Josef Sarreal)

When her father, Josef Sarreal, died in a traffic accident last year, Jennifer Tehani Sarreal looked for a fitting tribute for him.

Josef was a stock photographer who also did art photography, so part of tonight's program at Awakenings Coffee House in Lomita is devoted to an exhibit of his work.

But there's a lot more than that, because there's a lot more to Jennifer Tehani Sarreal, 25, a Long Beach performer and educator.

She began dancing at age 8 and in 2008 won the fusion category of the Belly Dancer of the Universe Competition. Her other dancing specialties include ballroom, Latin, hip-hop, salsa, Polynesian (including fire poi), West African and Filipino.

Sarreal does educational programs in public schools, libraries and museums that center on dance anthropology (she has a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Cal State Long Beach), incorporating sociology, history, arts, spirituality and social activism.

Tonight, after a warm-up performance by champion juggler David Cousin, a friend of hers, Surreal will do her first one-woman show, titled "Tradition and Fusion." It begins with a spoken-word piece on the theme "Why Art Matters." Sarreal (pronounced surreal) is also a freelance writer about art.

"It's the most powerful way to connect people," Sarreal, whose heritage includes Spanish, Filipino, Portuguese, Irish and French, said in a phone interview this week. "It builds bridges between gaps such as culture, language, gender and religion."

Sarreal described what she does as "artivism," a combination of art and activism.

After the spoken piece comes a traditional Middle Eastern belly dance, part of which involves her balancing a scimitar on her head. Then there are a couple of Polynesian fusion dances, an original speak-song performed with ukulele that takes a funny look at her first visit to the Philippines, in 2007.

Afterward, she'll dance an auna hula, "Wanting Memory," by Kealii Reichel, which talks about using memories of a loved one to move forward.

Awakenings, which is an event space on the site of a former coffee house, doesn't allow pyrotechnics, so Sarreal's fire poi Maori dance from New Zealand will feature silk strips emblematic of flame coming out of the sacks at the end of the long strings she uses, rather than fire.

The show concludes with a fusion dance that mixes Latin, hip-hop, belly dancing and Polynesian dance.

Admission is $15, with funds benefiting the Josef Sarreal Foundation that Sarreal is in the process of setting up. She wants to provide free visual and performance art workshops for children and teenagers in select cities around the world "with the goal of empowering youth through creative expression."

Funds also will go toward humanitarian and environmental aid in areas near her art projects.

The Other Side......

I'm sorry to say that I am not for this word being posted on the free speech board. I understand that people have the right to use it, and I do beleive that it started out with the best of intentions. However, it no longer has a point or purpose. The "censorship" you see was an attempt to make the board presentable for an open house that night. I for one proudly took part in trying to camoflouge all the many f-words up there. This board is a reflection of our school. In turn it is a reflection of me as a student at QV...right now, with these messages up, I am not proud to attend. For those of you that know me, you know that it takes a lot to offend me. I'm a very open person, but this has now offended me. If you have a purpose then thats fine. If you are writing that word just because everyone else is then, quite frankly, I don't consider that freedom of speech. THAT is just following the crowd. There have been more updates to the board since this picture was posted. There is one posting that talks about the difference between a wise man and in ignorant man, and at the end it tells the ignorant man to continue using the word...Someone drew an arrow pointing to the statement and said something to the effect of "Thanks, I f-ing will". Now I ask you. Why would you admit to being ignorant? What purpose does it serve? I think it moves into idiotic territory at that point.

I saw the board when it was first put up, before all the additions to it. I stood back, and thought that it was a good display. I thought that it was informative, and not offensive...I see that board now, and am shocked at how much has gone on. Freedom of speech is the right to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas. Where is the information? Where are the ideas? The only information I have seen supporting the word was written at the very beginning and has now been written over many times. The information I see opposing the board is now written on sheets of paper and stapled to the board...If someone were to write something informative supporting the word again maybe I would have a different view. Maybe I could change my opinion....until then all this board is, to me, is ugly.

How Free Are We

Here is a picture I took of our Free Speech Board at QV yesterday... which has led me to ask the same question that some of you have already asked...HOW FREE ARE WE? If you can't tell by the picture what happened was, one person wrote a word (FUCK) on the wall and then some fellow students censored him. What ensued is actually quite amusing. I say we all wear shirts that simply say FUCK on them on a particular day next week. Or if someone is creative enough to come up with a phrase that uses F. U. C. K. that sends a message, we could do that.

Earth Nebula

This one, I think by Jon, reminds me of a nebula . . . for some instinctual reason . . . This painting is slightly other-dimensional, it seems, as getting it in "good light' is difficult. However, with the magick of 21st century painting technology (i.e. digital photography & computer programs) the quantum dimensions can be breached. The photo fix I applied changed the color hue, saturation and intensity . . . and thus gives the painting a new color meaning. The representation posted here, from a photo by Ginny, reminds me of the beginnings of the earth, before it coelesced into a solid mass.

. . . and this photo fix is more like the original . . . as far as my memory serves right now . . .

Just an example of the power of 21st century technology in the arts. A power we can wield. A power we need to wield.

Judgement

This one is by Tom, and he demonstrates the use of the human body (me) and a hypodermic filled with paint (no needle), as well as a wide brush used for stroking and for splattering, and spray paint to tag the painting for the Rebel Arts Union. He mentioned the impetus for the painting was the feeling of being jailed, but he wasn't sure what it evolved into during the creative process - hence the name I applied here. this image is reduced.

Tom used the hypo-paint application method on several of the works we made Saturday the Fourteenth.

The Sky Is Falling

This is tempera, acrylic, latex and spray paint on canvas, by me. Fingers were used as tools to apply the paint.

Example

Here is a detail from "Inside-Out" and two of an endless variety of ways this, and every detail, from our orgiastic paintings can be further creatively modified as computer art to use in any number of forms . . . including poster-size prints . . . yo.

This is the original from a photo by Ginny, reduced:

And these two (click pic to enlarge to see detail) are just a couple idle tweaks i did in less than a half-hour's time, reduced:

And here we have a poster made from the second modification:

. . . and that's what this blog is for, us, all of us, to experiment, exchange ideas, and most importantly, CREATE. C'mon, lemme see what ya got. (just remember to go to the official groupsite ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rebel-arts-union/ ) to get the original photos from the Files section, don't use these as these are all reductions & modifications)

Timeflow, Detail, Cropped, Flipped, Reduced

This one is one of Jon's old oil on canvas paintings re-done during the Orgy, hence the interim name I gave it. This presents some very interesting, and evocative, options in style and message. This specific painting is in its 3rd incarnation (if I heard right), being twice painted over now. I really like the possibilities that this gives us: painting over old paintings, but leaving the previous painting partially visible.

I don't know the artist, but this is latex paint over oil paint on canvas.

Late Hanging Canvas, Cropped, Reduced

Our group effort creatively led by Jon. I don't know how late in the day this picture was taken, but by this time we have tempera & spray paints joining the latex paint on canvas. You'll notice that the canvas was turned, and the early-version bottom is on the left now.

Designer T

This t-shirt design has combined several elements that ended up being common group elements, and so may be an early study in the RAU style. Note the latticework, bold straight lines, red circle, shocking pink tinge which is also a graffiti. I don't know the artist, but that's latex, tempera and spray paint on cotton.

Atomic Landscape, Detail, Reduced

"Atomic Landscape" imagine yourself so tiny as to be atom size . . . perhaps this would be a view from there. I don't know who painted this one (but I should because I was talking to you about this painting . . . if you give me three guesses . . . Sarah, Samantha, Stephanie). This one emphasizes the bold use of red circular structures that we seem to use as a group.

I was right on the first guess: Sarah is the artist!

Designer Jeans, Detail, Reduced

"Designer Jeans" just a name -- all these names you guys can edit and put your own names in for your works. I'm just putting a name on for my own ease and benefit, but we can edit those names real easy. This is latex paint on denim by Stephanie.

First Step, Detail, Reduced, Flipped

(I don't know who did this one but love it and the concept. I gotta feeling Sarah is the artist.)

Charly informs me this is Tom's work. I still love it :)

Hey, all of us can go right in and edit the original posts as well as leave comments. Go right ahead and edit out my stuff on your pics, and edit in your stuff! No rules, yo! go for it. Be You.

This picture is cropped, reduced and flipped.

Street Cred, Detail, Reduced

"Street Cred" is just what came burbling up when I saw this spray-paint-silly-string-latex-paint boldness proudly announcing the RAU! Samantha is the artist.

Desert Mirage, Detail, Reduced

This painting by Brandon reminds me of a desert sun and mirage images, hence the name I associate with it. It shows an example of latticework in the foreground, and multi-color swirls, spirals, circles, oblongs, etc in the background . . . something I am fast becoming partial to. This picture has been cropped and reduced.

Butterfly Detail, Human Canvas

This is me, cropped, flipped, reduced (need a better camera next time) . . . the aftermath of my left boob after being used to add artistic touch to Tom's painting. Latex and tempera paint.

White Lightning, Detail, Reduced Image

"White Lightning" is the name that popped into my head when I first saw this painting. Why? I dunno. On second, third and subsequent looks saw Conflagration, Bird/Eagle/Phoenix Spirit and the latticework that seems to be a common element in some of our works.

Charly is the artist, and I think it's all latex paint. (and finger paint...haha)

Murder, Detail, Pollock Paint Orgy

"Murder" is just what I called this one in my head when I first saw it, it'd be great for a book cover, cd-cover, etc -- Jon painted it, latex paint and mascara. This picture is cropped and reduced.

Early Hanging Canvas, Pollock Paint Orgy

This is the hanging canvas, our group effort, at about the midway point or so. Latex and tempera paint.

Four Details, Pollock Paint Orgy

Four details of 2 of our canvases from the Pollock Paint Orgy. Latex and tempera paint (the black) on canvas.

These 2 details from "Inside Out" - the group painting we did at the end. These pics are from before Jon & I moved it inside . . . it got real funky-looking the second time through the doors. I wonder what is waiting for us under the strips once the paint dries . . .

These 2 details from "Rainbow Crow" - my painting done with a crow feather, a shaved stick, latex & tempera paint.

In Praise of Inanna

Another poem by history's first poet, as well as history's first named author, the Sumerian high priestess Enheduanna. The top picture is Inanna, the bottom picture is Enheduanna:

In Praise of Inanna

No one has sung “Let the world know!”

To Nanna

But only to his daughter, you, Inanna.

You are lofty like Heaven. “Let the world know!”

You are wide like the Earth. “Let the world know!”

You devastate the rebellious land. “Let the world know!”

You roar over the land. “Let the world know!”

You smash their heads. “Let the world know!”

You devour corpses like a dog. “Let the world know!”

Your glance is terrible. “Let the world know!”

You raise your terrible glance. “Let the world know!”

Your glance is flashing. “Let the world know!”

You are victorious. “Let the world know!”

No one has sung “Let the world know!”

To Nanna

But only to his daughter, you, Inanna.

O my lady, this song has made you great

And exalted you.

O my lady, I have told your fury!

Condemning the Moongod Nanna

Here is one poem by history's first poet, the priestess of Inanna, Enheduanna. The rectangular stone is the cuneiform version of this poem, and the circular stone is a representation of Enheduanna (she's first in line).

Condemning the Moongod Nanna

As for me, my Nanna ignores me.
He has taken me to destruction,
To the alleys of murder.
Ashimbabbar has not judged me wrong.
If he had, what do I care?
If he had, what do I care?
I am Enheduanna.
I was triumphant, glorious,
But he drove me from my sanctuary.
He made me escape like a swallow
From the window.
My life is in flames.
He made me walk through the brambles
On the mountain.
He stripped me of the crown correct
For a high priestess.
He gave me a dagger and a sword,
And said :
"Turn them against your own body.
They are made for you."

The Agony of the Worms

The Agony of the Worms

the pre-dawn drizzle dewed heavy today calling us all out to play and in the dark green grass rejoice in our collective silent voice for the life we hold so dear and it's loss we all dreadfear but for an earthly morning moment tiny with flowers fragrant and wild with the first sharp light of a golden dawn sprinkling rainbows in dew drops across the lawn we banished all fear all sense all caution intoxicated by the orgiastic notion that here and now was forever more and finally the weather is turned and the age of the worm is returned so across the pavements of the human aglisten with crystal pebbles by the billion and every here is glorious moist in bitsy puddles collecting early morning mirrored dapples which beckon us further in delight so as to forget the sun was not moonlight and as it rose relentless in the farflung sky the dew rose as mist as we did in worship cry a prayer that we all could make the other side of the human roads before we get dried in the hellish glare of the day suntime and in our voiceless voice we mime the agony of our hopeless fate because now the birds think it's great the deadly sun has dried the day leaving us dreadfully out of the way of safety in any way the birds win the day as the crow calls in the banshee who plucks at will the lives of so many and the worst of it all begins as the humans appear like jinns crushing us flat underfoot without even a second look

Incompertus Redarguo Infidus Vox

An Ontological Elucidation by Mortimer

.1.

Imagine a thick blanket of newly fallen wet snow hushed upon a pine forest glen. The white tranquility sparkles in the immaculate sunlight after the storm. Mighty green boughs softly hold the weight of the clouds in peaceful beauty. Consider now that the snow never melts away and instead freezes into permanence. The fragile limbs of pine break and the land suffocates in a grey pallor. What then? What remains but the fustian promise of a springtime that never bloomed?

Life is lived to die.

.3.

Fiat Lux

Mors ianua vitae.

We recognize and mark extremism in religions by naming them radical or fundamentalist cults. What we forget is that religionism itself is a radical, fundamentalist philosophy because it displaces the individual with a lie. Life is our eternity.

Ogygion.

.4.

Cui Bono

In nomine domini incipit omne malum.

Religionism is the adventitious, all-incorporative weltanschauungen apotheosis of faith whereby the chimeras of the mind birth a transcendent reality. The mandates of religionism are inscrutable. Each principle that does not nakedly reveal itself to investigation is a metonymic shackle upon the polysemic percipience of the devotees. Each semeiotic binding prohibits analysis into, and synthesis of, the natural veracity of the sacrosanct belief it upholds or the lucid truth it withholds. Religionism thereby sciolistically trammels prehension in bounds of exalted doxy. Religionism posits this cession of perspicacity as proof of the prime phenomenon. The chains of this fraudulent dogma domesticate each devotee. Each is tasked to live within the parameters of an assumptive actuality wherein there is an unfathomably aware primum mobile for the cosmos. Further, each person, from prophet to follower to convert to heretic to unbeliever to nonbeliever, is personally and foreknowingly registered in that bewilderingly empyrean mind. Further still, each person has a certain inescapable fate to fulfill barring divine intervention; man to god, woman to man, child to woman, beast to man, plant to woman. Holy manuals of maleficium mechanically tune the outlook, expectations and goals of the devout robotnik. There is a time, a place and a reason for everything, even our inexplicable permission to prefer the petty to the primordial and the guilty pleasures thereof. Religionism pimps this improbable fabrication as the quintessential reality within which all else must converge. Religionism relentlessly condemns as defective those who flounder short of completing the paradigm. Life is raw. Survival is vicious. Everyone fails the ideal. Everyone is a mirror reflecting good and evil. Nevertheless, not everyone gets a just reward, good or ill. There are always the summum bonus who have special dispensation to be contrary, and the why of their prerogative is imponderable. As well, there is the profanum vulgus for whom every turning is amiss, and the why of their indenture is baffling. Prophets and preachers can get a free pass directly from on high, but workers and wives don't get to communicate mano y deo. The gestaltqualität teachings of religionism, its peremptions on life and its muzzling of free will in the name of purity, are machinations for obligating the hapless legions to the prelationism of the elect. One of the more dastardly catechizations in the repertoire of asyndetic exhortations is the ever-present menace of deathless damnation to pacify the public into being spiritless sisyphuses. It works so well, however, that each reprobate dutifully tightens the fetters of thralldom whenever the merest whiff of free thought floats by on the cerebral breeze, and then docily kneels to lay bare back to the rock yet again. The hounds of Persephone are ever watchful for the once and future queen.

Epiphenomenalism.

.5.

Aeternum Horribilis

Lacrimae pondera vocis habent.

Fugacious humantime is but the fall of a tear to the consummate persistence of celestial godtime. There is no escape. Religionism chains us, tames us, and blames us in the very same manner as does its spiegelübelzwilling, scientism: connaturally circumscribing zealots into a passel of parasitic packs of mutually pugnacious mechanomorphic parishioners. The affollarsi live for the predilections of the patricianist camarillas. Permissions for unequivocal self-determinations are routinely and amerceably denied. All our dearest and deepest desires, all our purest dreams of rapture for the gravest of all the beloved sins, free will, excites naught but the consumptive insanity of guilt, shame and punishment for the addict of religionism, or the votarist of scientism. The royal troth of a sum futuro sublimis compelling the abominable wedding of freedom to helotry profanes, enslaves and rapes the only divinity within us. Amaranthine domestication replaces joie de vivre. Mortality is nothing but a confused squall in the perpetual pandemonium of the maelström.

Tu deviens responsible pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivoisé.

.6.

Deus Ex Machina

Le serpent qui danse.

Our civilization is now in the nescient throes of a perfidious cult that ceaselessly and cozenly seduces the wearied and weakened wills of its sotted and swindled sectarians with the glitter of gold. Belief in the divine right of the moneyed dictates who will live, and how well, and who will die, and how miserably. Money apportions survival, safety, health, education, fun, status, power and more to those who are blessed to glory in the sacraments.

Money changes everything.

Money aids, influences and enables.

Money is the miracle that accords all the virtuous fortunes of eudomenia.

Money cleans, clarifies and clears.

Money flushes troubles, heals ailments and renews vigor.

Money supplies entertainment, enjoyment and festivity.

Money baptizes, anoints and ordains.

Money provides sustenance, shelter and suits.

Money rationalizes, redeems and releases.

Money favors, bequeaths and celebrates.

Money reprieves, relieves and rescues.

Money defends, fortifies and preserves.

Money mediates, mitigates and mollifies.

Money extenuates, exculpates and exonerates.

Money accuses, sentences and executes.

Money transacts, transfers and transmutes.

Money recommends, promotes and sustains.

Money schools, researches and discovers.

Money develops, evolves and creates.

Money intrigues, edifies and bewilders.

Money enthuses, enlightens and enlivens.

Money appropriates, classifies and ranks.

Money eases, endorses and establishes.

Money implores, obliges and motivates.

Money designates, discriminates and denominates.

Money emancipates, enfranchises and empowers.

Money encourages, inspires and conquers.

Money dignifies, enthrones and glorifies.

Money safeguards the freedom of the mind and recognizes the independence of the individual.

Money is the impetus for productivity and the stimulant for advancement.

Money stabilizes communities, builds nations and controls global events.

Money heralds historic movements and validates monolithic leadership.

Money is insurance against catastrophe and the seed of prosperity.

Money comforts, nurtures and lavishes.

Money is proof of past honour and declarer of future loyalty.

Money is the confirmation of accomplished worth and the certification of forthcoming value.

Money ensures human interactions are collectively consummated to virtuous advantage.

Money engenders the philanthropic justice of charitable endowment by revealing the joyful wisdoms of mercy, beneficence and almsgiving.

Money accrues interest, accretes with reputation and accredits truth.

Money is the award of achievement and promise of progress.

Money is the prime mover of invention, art and science.

Money is the key of liberty and the book of justice.

Money is the badge of excellence and the arch of triumph.

Money is the avowal of a good life and the affiance of a facile death.

Money is the holy oil of anointment.

Money is the selfless sacrament of salvation.

Money is pure moral principle actualized.

Money is divine grace made tangible.

This cant belongs to the palaverous denomination that is the prodigal child of imperial mercantilism, bully-capitalism.

Homo sine pecunia mortis imago.

.7.

Sine Qua Non

Necessitarianism.

All currency is declared by fiat. Belief in the objective value of money has no intrinsicality in nature, yet money pervades every interaction celebrants partake like oil on water. There is the further nihilistic belief that money is the mechanism for acquiring freedom, with the sole alternatives being blood and whips. Everyone is born without choice into this fallacious faith of currency wherein apostasy is the most unintelligible of sins. Everyone is born duty-bound. Everyone lives within a predatory eco-system embodying debts of vice and profits of virtue. Followers can conceive of no supportable good without a foundation of money, and no resolute evil that money cannot dissolve. The evolutionary whip of life is made real in the blood of money.

Money buys food.

Money buys clothing.

Money buys shelter.

Enough money allows the practitioner to survive to earn more money to survive longer. Enthusiasts live to produce money in order to control portions of the lives of other advocates, and to purchase their own lives back from other partisans.

Money buys labour.

Money buys skill.

Money buys time.

More money allocates the blessing of more wage-slaves, and further, even more money wholesales better skilled villeins.

Money buys a home.

Money buys a family.

Money buys a future.

Profit is natural serendipity for those who are productive, while debt stains and restrains the sophist and pharisee. Boundless prosperity is the natural conclusion for a life of habitual virtue, while inexhaustible poverty is righteous retribution for a life of chronic vice.

Money buys respect.

Money buys power.

Money buys law.

Money buys dreams.

Money buys life.

Money buys death.

Money begets money.

Money is the price that must be paid.

The poor are misanthropic malingerers who deserve their fate because they lack the supra-natural comprehension of the blessed precepts of production, profit and prosperity. Those who cannot declare enough coin of the realm have demonstrated their deficiency and have condemned themselves to a penurious purgatory on earth.

Money is the entry for every detail.

Money is the bottom line.

Money is the value; the value names the unknown; the value is made judgment.

Money is the best of things and the end of everything else.

Il fine giustifica i mezzi.

Money is telos.

Money is the essence of life.

Shadow supplants substance.

Life is lived to lie.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

Even to wonder of a life without godmoney is so terrifying in its incomprehensibility that the glitterati must always be deluded by ignorance and guarded by illusion rote-masked as tenet. Money is simply asomatous paper and plastic.

Reject and rethink.

What is and what is not.

Money is an arbitrary measurement of value just as the meter is an arbitrary measurement of length. You cannot vanish length just because there is no ruler to measure it, and value does not dissipate just because there is no money to declare it. Further, length does not adjust to the current unit of measurement just as value does not fluctuate with the fugitive worth of money. Whether you believe or not, whether you heed or not, whether you understand or not, whether you name it or not, whether you lie or not, you and I both know it is so.

Researchers have modeled the human mental lexicon as consisting of words that cannot be separated from other words, which may explain why words have many associations, a feature which helps us communicate. Credit: Flickr.com by surrealmuse.

(PhysOrg.com) -- When you hear the word “planet,” do you automatically think of the word’s literal definition, or of other words, such as “Earth,” “space,” “Mars,” etc.? Especially when used in sentences, words tend to conjure up similar words automatically. Further, human beings’ ability to draw associations and inferences between words may explain why we’re generally able to communicate complex ideas with each other quite clearly using a limited number of words.

Research has shown that words are stored in our memories not as isolated entities but as part of a network of related words. This explains why seeing or hearing a word activates words related to it through prior experiences. In trying to understand these connections, scientists visualize a map of links among words called the mental lexicon that shows how words in a vocabulary are interconnected through other words.

However, it’s not clear just how this word association network works. For instance, does word association spread like a wave through a fixed network, weakening with conceptual distance, as suggested by the “Spreading Activation” model? Or does a word activate every other associated word simultaneously, as suggested in a model called “Spooky Activation at a Distance”?

Although these two explanations appear to be mutually exclusive, a recent study reveals a connection between the explanations by making one novel assumption: that words can become entangled in the human mental lexicon. In the study, researchers from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia and the University of South Florida in the US have investigated the quantum nature of word associations and presented a simplified quantum model of a mental lexicon.

Classical vs. Quantum Correlations

The researchers begin by explaining the difference between classical correlations (in the Spreading Activation model) and quantum correlations (in the Spooky Activation at a Distance model). Specifically, no pre-existing elements or hidden variables exist in quantum correlations as they do in classical correlations. For example, a classical correlation would be a scenario in which someone writes the same number on two pieces of paper, and sends them to two distant ends of the Universe. When received, both papers have the same number, but this correlation is due to a pre-existing action.

On the other hand, the quantum analogue of this scenario is much stranger. At one end of the Universe, someone writes a number on a blank piece of paper. At the other end of the Universe, another individual discovers that the same number is written on another piece of paper. Called quantum entanglement, this scenario doesn’t occur in everyday life, but it has been observed at the quantum scale and is referred to as “non-locality.”

Non-Separable Entities

In this study, the researchers ask if quantum entanglement might exist for systems beyond modern physics, such as word correlations.

“We take the position that quantum entanglement in modern physics is a physical manifestation of something more general called ‘non-separability,’” coauthor Peter Bruza of QUT told PhysOrg.com. “We view quantum theory as an abstract framework for developing models of non-separability in a variety of domains including cognition. Note that, even though we are using quantum theory to model the non-separability of words in human memory, we make no claim that this corresponds to a physical manifestation of entanglement in the brain.”

In the researchers’ word entanglement model, each associated word can either be recalled or not recalled. An entangled state would occur when two associated words (e.g. “Earth” and “space”) are either both recalled or both not recalled in relation to a cue word (e.g. “planet”). Intuitively, this makes sense: when visualizing Earth, it’s hard to not also visualize the surrounding space. In this example, Earth and space make up a non-separable entity.

Word Recall Probability

Next, the researchers suggest that the probability of a word being activated in memory lies somewhere between Spreading Activation (in which words are individually recalled based on individually calculated conceptual distance) and Spooky Activation at a Distance (in which the cue word simultaneously activates the entire associative structure). Most likely, Spreading Activation underestimates the strength of activation, while Spooky Activation at a Distance overestimates the strength of activation.

“Even though both the Spreading Activation and Spooky-Activation-at-a-Distance models are based on an underlying network, both models are still fundamentally reductive in nature and assume that words are separate, distinct entities in human memory,” Bruza explained. On the other hand, the quantum-based model doesn’t assume that words are separate entities.

In the new model, associative word recall probability depends on how strongly connected the associated words are to each other. For instance, “Earth” and “space” are entangled in the context of “planet,” but “Earth” and “gas giant” may not be entangled (though “Jupiter” and “gas giant” may be). Words that are entangled with many other words have a greater probability of being recalled, while words that are entangled with few or no other words have a smaller recall probability. While the idea of word entanglement may sound odd, Bruza explained that it may be just one example of a strange concept.

“We think it is odd that entanglement occurs at all,” he said. “As a phenomenon, it suggests that the world is not the separable and reducible place that we have always taken it to be. If entanglement is found in other types of (non-physical) systems, it will suggest that the quantum formalism is modeling non-separability per se, and this will indicate that quantum theory could provide a whole new approach to the study of complex systems, i.e. non-separable and irreducible systems.”

The Future of Quantum Cognition

The researchers explain that their model is overly simplified, and it would be very difficult to extrapolate to a more realistic model due to the vastness of the human mental lexicon. However, experiments involving memory tests might be able to distinguish between the predictions of the three different models. Currently, researchers are performing an empirical analysis using the University of South Florida’s “Free Association Norms,” a database of word association norms which involves data from more than 6,000 participants producing nearly three-quarters of a million responses to 5,019 stimulus words. Eventually, all this analysis of semantic models may have applications for future technology, Bruza explained.

“Current information processing technology is very efficient at processing symbols, but is largely clueless as to what they mean,” he said. “Our position is that, in order for such technology to better align with humans, it needs to process ‘meanings’ like those we harbor. As our information environment becomes more complex, we will need technology that can draw context-sensitive associations like the ones we would draw, but increasingly don’t as we lack the cognitive resources to do so. Therefore, such the ‘meanings’ processed by such technology should be motivated from a socio-cognitive perspective.”

This kind of research is an example of an emerging field called “quantum cognition,” the aim of which is to use quantum theory to develop radically new models of a variety of cognitive phenomena ranging from human memory to decision making. Although speculative, this research is gaining momentum. For instance, later this year, the highly regarded Journal of Mathematical Psychology will publish a special issue of quantum models of cognition. In addition, quantum cognition is a prominent theme within the Quantum Interaction Symposia, which provide a forum for a growing body of researchers applying quantum theory to non-quantum domains.
